Mikrotik CCR1016 with multiple hotspot interfaces

by razhsnm » 03 May 2018, 12:02

Hi,
We are using a Mikrotik CCR1016 with 12 ports. Ether1 as Wan and ether2 as member of the bridge from the HSNM gateway configuration.
However, we configure ether3-12 as layer 3 ports that has its own subnets with Access Points connected to its ports.
We wanted the users on these ports to be authenticated by HSNM so we made the ports to be hotspot interfaces and use the hotspot profile created by HSNM.
So far, everything is working fine and all users can authenticate with the cards whichever ports they are connected.
We just wanted to clarify if this additional custom configuration we made is allowed.
The reason why we do this is that we dont want a single large subnet for the hotspot so we split to /24 instead of /16 and use the remaining ports.

Hi Razhsnm,
There isn't any problem with the configuration you have made.  Just always bare in mind that you must only use one hotspot server in each gateway.

Hi,
When you said only one hotspot server in each gateway, it means only one interface or bridge as hotspot interface?

Please confirm if we can continue to use this custom setup we did for this cloud core mikrotik. Succeeding sites we will just be using the low-end mikrotiks to have one gateway per network.

Hi Razhsnm,
in addition to what HSNMSupport1 already answered I would like to specify that each gateway must have only one Hotspot server configured under IP/Hotspot.
Best Regards.

Thank you. But as you have said we can continue to use the custom setup that has multiple hotspot server under IP/Hotspot. We will keep monitor this but will be deploying small mikrotiks for the next sites with single hotspot servers only.

Hi Razhsnm,

sorry but at the beginning, when I read your first post, I misunderstood the way you configured your Gateway.

Basically you can customize your gateway as you prefer, and everything should work properly. We suggest to configure each gateway with only one hotspot server because, in some cases, some automatism may not work between the Gateway and the HSNM.

Best Regards.

Hi,
Thank you for understanding my concern. We will keep monitoring this and see if we don't encounter any issue. Right now there are 11 ports including the default ether-bridge as hotspot servers and everything is working fine with no issue.
